It occurs when the tear gland, located in the corner of the eye, becomes inflamed or irritated, causing it to protrude from its normal position. This condition gets its name due to the red, cherry-like appearance of the affected gland. Causes of Dog Cherry Eye The exact cause of Dog Cherry Eye is still unknown, but it is believed to be a result of a weakened connective tissue that supports the gland. Certain breeds, such as Bulldogs, Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, and Shih Tzus, are more prone to this condition. It may also be caused by genetics, infections, or trauma to the eye area.
